Frequently Asked Questions
What’s with the name Moving Sea Therapy?
Unfortunately, no, therapy with Moving Sea will not be conducted in the ocean or at the beach. (At least not yet!) I chose Moving Sea as the practice name for a few reasons. I believe engaging in therapy and living a meaningful life involves constant growth. Growth is not static but requires constant active and intentional movement, hence Moving. I love the ACT-based idea of “riding the wave,” which basically means that we will face many life difficulties and often times the best way we can move through these difficulties is not by resisting them, but by sitting in and riding them out. We can experience the sensations of letting go of resistance and choosing instead to float and ride out waves in, you got it, the Sea. Lastly, as a Cancer, I also find the sea very grounding and revitalizing so Moving Sea Therapy, PLLC encompasses both my professional and personal values.
Is walk-and-talk therapy as straightforward as it sounds?
Yes. Walk-and-talk therapy involves moving therapy from the traditional seated, face-to-face modality to a natural outdoor environment where we can walk while we talk. The benefits of walk-and-talk therapy can include increased comfort with discussing difficult topics (due to the reduced focus on eye contact and sitting still), improved energy and mood from physical exercise/movement, and enhanced mindfulness and connectivity to nature. It is important to consider the confidentiality concerns of possibly seeing someone you know or having someone overhear our conversations while walking in public spaces, as well as mobility and potential injury concerns, when engaging in walk-and-talk therapy. I might be interested in walk-and-talk sessions. Where would we meet?
If you live in or near the Raleigh area, you might be aware that we are blessed with an abundance of beautiful walking trails. So, we have lots of options! You can choose a trail/park near your home or I can provide options of trails in the area. We can also meet virtually or at my office in North Raleigh at times depending on the weather and your preferences.
I hate nature and don’t want to do walk-and-talk sessions.
Not really a question, but if this resonates with you, cool, let’s meet at my office or virtually. I have a cozy office with coffee and blankets, and use a HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform called Doxy for virtual therapy sessions. I like providing different options so you can choose what suits you and your treatment goals best.
Do you accept insurance?
I do not accept insurance at this time. The benefits of not filing with insurance include greater control of your private information and treatment decisions, as insurance companies require diagnosis information, can dictate your treatment frequency and duration, and can store your treatment information on your permanent medical record. I am happy to provide superbills if your insurance company offers out-of-network reimbursement, but may ned to disclose treatment information and provide a diagnosis in that case. I also offer a few reduced rate session spots for those with financial need. Please ask about this option prior to our first session to determine availability and rate.
When can we start?
Yay! I sincerely appreciate you taking this often difficult step of asking for help and trusting the therapeutic process. We can typically start counseling in a week or two, depending on your preferences and our mutual availability. I generally see clients from 10 am to 8 pm Monday - Thursday, along with some availability for walk-and-talk sessions on Fridays and Saturdays. I currently have availability for in-person sessions at my North Raleigh office on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please reach out via email, phone, or the contact form on this site’s welcome page to schedule a consultation call or discuss next steps. I am honored to join you in your process of healing and growing, and look forward to hearing from you!
